LE PEN'S PAST CATCHING UP ON HIM?

Le Monde yesterday carried at piece about four Algerians who claim that Le Pen personally administered torture to them during Algeria's war for independence from France in the 1960's:

"Le Monde newspaper printed accounts by four men who allege that Le Pen, a former paratrooper, took part in torture sessions to try to extract information from them during the brutal seven-year war that ended with Algeria's independence from France in 1962.

"Jean-Marie Le Pen always did his work as a soldier, and this work consisted of bringing peace, not torturing people," Pinel told The Associated Press. "There was no torture involved."

Le Monde said it interviewed victims who had never talked publicly about their experiences but felt obliged to speak out after Le Pen's surprise success in the April 21 first round of the French presidential elections. In the May 5 final round, conservative Chirac crushed Le Pen by taking 82 percent of the vote.

One man quoted by Le Monde, Mustapha Merouane, claimed that Le Pen personally flipped the switch to administer electric shocks."
